1ἐπὶ Φαινίππου, Γεραστίου νουμηνία,
2Θεύδοτος Μενητίδα εἶπεν· v ἐπειδὴ̣
3Θευγένης Ἑρμογένου ἀποσταλεὶ[ς]
4δικασταγωγὸς ποτὶ Ζμυρναίος οἰ–
5κείος εὖντας καὶ εὔνους καὶ φίλους
6τοῦ δάμου ἐπελθὼν παρ᾿ αὐτοῖς ἐπί
7τε τὰν βουλὰν καὶ τὰν ἐκκλησίαν καὶ
8ποιησάμενος τὸς κατὰ μέρος λόγ[ος]
9μετὰ πάσας φιλοτιμίας καὶ ἐκτενε[ίας]
10παρεστάσατο δόμεν τᾶι πόλει δι[κασ]–
11τὰς δύο καὶ γραμματῆ ἄνδρας καλοὺς
12καὶ ἀγαθοὺς καὶ πιστευομένους παρ᾿ αὐ–
13τοῖς, τάν τε παρεπιδαμίαν ἐποιήσα{ν}το
14ἀξίαν ἀμφοτερᾶν τᾶν πολίων, ὑπὲρ
15ὧν ἁπάντων διαμεμαρτυρήκαντι Ζμυρ–
16ναῖοι διὰ τᾶς δοθείσας αὐτῶι ἀποκρίσι–
17ος, παραλαβών τε τὸς ἄνδρας καὶ παρα–
18γενόμενος ἐς τὰν πόλιν πᾶσαν κακοπα̣–
19θίαν καὶ ἐπιμέλειαν πεποίηται ποτικαρτε–
20ρήσας καὶ τᾶι δικαστοφυλακίαι ἐκτενῶς
21καὶ δικαίως ἀκολούθως τῶι ὅρκωι, ἕως οὗ
22διεξάχθη τά τε δαμόσια καὶ ἰδιωτικὰ
23συμβόλαια, διαφυλάξας ἴσως καὶ δικαίως
24καὶ μισοπονήρως πᾶσι τὰν ἐνχειρισθεῖσαν
25αὐτῶι πίστιν ὑπὸ τοῦ σύμπαντος δάμου,
26δαπάνας τε ποταναδέδεκται ἐκ τῶν ἰδί–
27ων ἔς τε τὰν παρουσίαν αὐτῶν καὶ ἐν ταῖς δα–
28μοτελέσι ἑορταῖς ἀποστολὰς ποιούμενος
29κατὰ τοὺς ἁρμόζοντας καιροὺς ἕνεκεν
30τοῦ κοινᾶι συμφέροντος· ὅπως οὖν καὶ ὁ δᾶ–
31μος εὐχαρίστως ἀπαντῶν φαίνηται τοῖς ἀγα–
32θοῖς τῶν ἀνδρῶν τοί τε ἄλλοι θεωρεῦντες
33τὰν εὐχαρι<σ>τίαν τοῦ πλήθευς πολὺ προθυμό–
34τερον ἐπιδιδῶντι ἑαυτοὺς εἰς πάντα τὰ συν–
35φέροντα τᾶι πόλει, ἀγαθᾶι τύχαι, δεδόχθαι τᾶι
36ἐκκλησίαι· ἐπαινῆσθαι Θευγένην Ἑρμογένου κα[ὶ]
37στεφανῶσαι αὐτὸν χρυσέωι στεφάνωι ἐ̣π̣ὶ̣ τῶι ἐ–
38ξαποσταλέντα δικασταγωγὸν διαφυλάξαι πᾶ–
39σιν ἴσως τὰν δοθεῖσαν αὐτῶι πίστ[ιν] ὑπὸ τοῦ δά–
40μου· ἀναγορευσάτω δὲ καὶ ὁ ἱεροκᾶρυξ [τὸ]ν στ[έ]φα–
41νον Διονυσίων τῶι πράτωι ἀγῶνι με[τὰ τ]ὰς σπον–
42δάς, τᾶς δὲ ἀναγορεύσιος ἐπιμεληθέντω το[ί τε]
43προστάται καὶ ὁ ἀγωνοθέτας, ἐξῆ[με]ν δὲ αὐτῶ[ι]
44τόδε τὸ ψάφισμα ἀναγράψαντι ἐστάλαν λιθίναν
45ἀναθέμεν ἐν τῶι ἱερῶι τοῦ Ἀσκλαπιοῦ. ἔδοξε τ[ᾶι]
46βουλᾶι καὶ τῶι δάμωι, γνώ{ι}μα προστατᾶν· χρῆσθαι
47τᾷ Θευδότου ἐφόδωι. ψᾶφοι στερεαὶ ἐ̣π̣ιδιδοῦσα[ι]

1Unter (dem monarchos) Phainippos, im Gerastios, am ersten;
2Theudotos S. d. Menetidas stellte den Antrag: Da
3Theugenes S. d. Hermogenes, entsandt
4als Richterwerber zu den Smyrnäern, die
5vertraut sind und wohlgesonnen und befreundet
6unserem Volk, bei ihnen vor dem
7Rat und der Volksversammlung auftrat und
8in einer Rede über die einzelnen Punkte
9mit allem Eifer und Beharrlichkeit
10darauf drang, dass der Stadt zwei
11Richter und ein Sekretär gegeben würden, und zwar treffliche
12und bei ihnen Vertrauen genießende Männer;
13und er seinen Aufenthalt in einer Weise gestaltete,
14die beider Städte würdig war, wovon
15von allem die Smyrnäer Zeugnis abgelegt haben
16in der ihm übergebenen Antwort;
17und er die Männer empfing und nach ihrer
18Ankunft in unserer Stadt alle Mühe
19und Fürsorge aufwandte, indem er sich
20auch der Richterbetreuung beharrlich
21und gerecht annahm gemäß seinem Eid, bis die
22öffentlichen und privaten Rechtsfälle
23erledigt waren; er dabei unparteiisch und gerecht
24und allen gegenüber integer das ihm vom
25gesamten Volk übertragen Vertrauen bewahrte,
26zusätzlich Gelder aufwandte aus eigenen
27Mitteln für den Aufenthalt der Richter und ihnen bei
28den öffentlichen Festen Geschenke machte
29zum jeweils geeigneten Zeitpunkt im allgemeinen
30Interesse; und damit nun auch das Volk in
31sichtbarer Weise den trefflichen Männern
32mit Dankbarkeit begegnet, und die anderen, indem
33sie die Dankbarkeit der Bevölkerung sehen, sich noch viel
34bereitwilliger für die Interessen der Stadt
35hergeben, zu Glück und Heil!, so wolle die Volksversammlung
36beschließen: dass man belobige Theugenes S.d. Hermogenes und
37ihn bekränze mit goldenem Kranz, da er, abgesandt
38als Richterwerber, allen gegenüber in gleicher Weise das
39ihm vom Volk gegebene Vertrauen bewahrt hat;
40es soll auch der Festherold den Kranz verkünden
41bei den Dionysien am ersten Wettkampf nach den
42Trankopfern; für die Verkündung sollen sorgen
43die Vorsteher und der Veranstalter der Spiele; es sei ihm gestattet,
44diesen Beschluss aufzuzeichnen auf eine steinerne Stele
45und zu weihen in dem Heiligtum des Asklepios. - Beschluss von
46Rat und Volk, nach Vorlage der Vorsteher: dass man den Vortrag
47des Theudotos übernehme. Solide, den Kranz bewilligende

3Theugenes son of Hermogenes, sent as
4judge-escort to the Smyrnaeans, who are
5intimates and well-disposed and friends
6of the people, coming among them to
7the council and assembly and
8making a detailed speech
9with all zeal and earnestness,
10urged them to give the city two
11judges and a secretary, men good
12and honorable and trusted among them;
13and the rest of his visit he conducted
14in a manner worthy of both cities; about
15all of which the Smyrnaeans have testified
16through the answer given to him;
17and having gathered the men and come
18to the city he has exerted every effort
19and care, persist-
20ing in his guardianship of the judges strenuously
21and justly, in keeping with his oath, up to the day
22the public and private cases were settled,
23preserving fairly and justly
24and righteously toward all the trust
25invested in him by the entire people,
26and he took up the costs at his own ex-
27pense for their residence and at the
28public festivals, making the payouts
29always at the appropriate times for the sake
30of the common advantage; and therefore, so that the
31people be manifest as dealing graciously with
32good men, and that others, seeing
33the gratitude of the populace far more eagerly
34devote themselves to all that is ad-
35vantageous to the city, for good fortune, it is decreed by
36the assembly: to praise Theugenes son of Hermogenes and
37crown him with a gold crown because,
38sent as judge-escort, he preserved for
39all alike the trust given him by the people;
40and the sacred herald is to proclaim the crown
41at the next contest of the Dionysia after the libations, and
42the prostatai and the agonothete are to see to the
43proclamation; he is permitted
44to inscribe this decree on a stone stele
45and erect it in the temple of Asklepios. It was decreed by
46the council and people, proposal of the prostatai: to use
47the formula of Theudotos. Solid tokens granting
48the crown, 885; broken, none.
